Phoenix Sky Harbor calls itself America's Friendliest Airport, and by big-hub standards it earns the nickname — but it's still a fifty-million-passenger operation in the middle of a construction boom, and the difference between a smooth trip and a rough one usually comes down to knowing three things: what's changed lately, which terminal you're dealing with, and exactly where your ride is meeting you. What's New at Sky Harbor in 2026
It's been the biggest news year at PHX in a long time.
Phoenix finally has a nonstop to Asia. STARLUX Airlines launched Taipei service in January 2026 — the airport's first-ever Asia route — and it worked so well that by July the airline upgraded the route to its flagship A350-1000, including a specially painted aircraft designed with Japanese artist Hajime Sorayama that made its first North American arrival right here.
Terminal 3 is getting six new gates. The $326 million North Concourse project is under construction now, adding six gates, a new lounge, new food and drink, and gate-area views of Camelback Mountain. Target completion: 2027. Until then, expect ongoing construction detours around Terminal 3.
The airport keeps breaking records. March 2026 was the busiest single month in Sky Harbor history — more than 5.1 million passengers — which is worth knowing if you're flying during spring training or a Final Four weekend: arrive earlier than you think.
New routes keep landing. 2026 additions include Porter Airlines' seasonal Vancouver nonstop, new Delta service to Austin, Alaska's daily flights to Sonoma County/Santa Rosa starting November 1, and American's winter seasonal route to Lincoln, Nebraska beginning December 17.
And under the hood: a 2,100-foot taxiway bridge connecting the north and south airfields is under construction with completion expected in 2027 — invisible to passengers except in the form of fewer taxi delays once it opens.
Which Terminal Is My Airline?
Sky Harbor has exactly two passenger terminals — 3 and 4. (Terminal 2 closed in 2020 and was demolished; Terminal 1 has been gone for decades. The numbering is a history lesson, not a map.) The split is simple:

Where Pickups Actually Happen
Arrivals and baggage claim are on Level 1 at both terminals, and the doors are numbered — which is the single most useful fact on this page. "I'm outside" means nothing at a terminal with a quarter mile of curb; "Door 8, Level 1, Terminal 4" means your ride finds you in one pass.
Three more things locals know: the curb is enforced, so drivers circling for a late traveler get moved along — anyone waiting for you should sit in the free cell phone waiting lot until you're physically at a door. Weekend evenings and event nights (spring training, big games, concert lets-outs) are when the curb crawls and rideshare prices surge with the crowd. And if your flight lands early or late, whoever's picking you up is guessing.

It runs around the clock connecting the 44th Street station (where it meets Valley Metro light rail), East Economy parking, Terminal 4, Terminal 3, and the Rental Car Center. If you're connecting between terminals, parked in East Economy, or arriving by light rail, the Sky Train is the move — trains come every few minutes and the terminal-to-terminal hop takes about five.
